Web Site Design Portfolio
Below, you can find a number of the web sites that we have built, together with a brief case study of the design.
Words Worth Reading Ltd
Words Worth Reading Ltd initially approached me for search engine optimisation. The site now ranks on the first page of Google.co.uk for many of the target key words and phrases such as manuscript proofreading, dissertation proofreading and improve my CV.
Subsequently, I was asked to rebuild the whole site which was an e-shop based on templates from the web host. I was asked to maintain the exact appearance of the web site. So I did. On the technical side of things, the product range is relatively small so I used a flat-file database with a simple password protected on-line editor so that anyone in the company can update prices at any time. The same system is used to run the events section, book sales, links and their useful articles sections. The e-commerce is integrated with RBS Worldpay® using a Romancart® shopping cart and Protx® as the payment gateway.
Teamwork in The City
A change of emphasis from general corporate events and team building to focus on cheap but effective team building in London.
The brief for this one was to modernise the site and to match it with the new logo and the 'guys carrying the arrow' which the client has just had designed for his promotional literature. Some of the wording was supplied by the client but most of it was written by me.
Switchback Mountain Adventure Ltd
The MD of Switchback Mountain Adventure Ltd had a very clear idea of the design that he wanted. I was shown a particular web site and we discussed the elements that he found particularly appealing and that he wanted including in his own site - the coloured curves and the chunky buttons being the main ones. The starting point for colours was the existing logo.
In addition, he wanted to be able to update the course details, prices and dates easily as well as a few other sections of text. We decided that a complete content management system was un-necessary and since he was comfortable using ftp and databases, I set up a partial content management system using a small database for courses and links with text files that could be used to update the core page information and also the Flash® presentation which was added to the home page as a second phase of development.
Luke Harrison Gardening Services
This is an example of our pay monthly web site option. The brief was very open, the client was not sure exactly what he wanted but realised that having a presence on the Internet was going to be beneficial. After choosing the design from a range of mock-ups he left the wording up to me.
Luke was also astute enough to realise that just having a web site was not good enough, and opted to add on monthly search engine work to the price of the site. Through a blend of strategic linking and article marketing, the site now appears on the front page of Google.co.uk for many terms related to his services. I was specifically asked to target Derby and the villages to the west of Derby as that is where his business is based. So now surfers looking for Luke's services such as fencing, decking, garden maintenance and so on in the region can find him on the Internet.
Swallow Barn
The proprietor of Swallow Barn had a very clear idea of the functionality that she required but not the exact design.
She had in mind the top banner and the drop-down menu but was not sure of the rest of the page layout. I suggested a few alternatives and it was this one with the images on the right hand side that pleased her the most. In order to ensure the drop down menu was compatible with all browsers and was search engine friendly, it was built using css only rather than relying on Flash® or Javascript.
In Nature
An e-commerce site selling teas imported from China.
The client had a good idea of the functionality and asked for the design to be based on the product packaging. This was a redesign of an existing site so the content was largely there. As with the Words Worth Reading Ltd web site, the range of products is not extensive and so the site is run from a flat file database with the static pages are php which enables fast site-wide updates to be made. Payment integration is to Barclays ePDQ or PayPal (customers can choose) via a Tele-Pro shopping cart.
